Smart Haptics and VT-1 Specificification Proposal

The Lofelt team returned to Smart Haptics in early December, and our CEO, Daniel Büttner, delivered his second keynote, Open-Sourcing Haptics – Paving the Way to Better Experiences. During the keynote, he unveiled a concrete proposal for objectively defining realistic vibrotactile feedback: the VT-1 specification. 

The lack of standardization in the haptics industry was a key topic at this year’s conference, and providing the framework for industry alignment was a huge leap forward for both Lofelt and the entire industry.

Smart Haptics is one of the most important conferences to move forward with such common issues for the industry, as it assembles key thinkers and leaders of the haptics industry in one place. 

Paper copies of the VT-1 specification were shared with the keynote audience, and since then, the document has been updated with new data, such as parameter values, photos and measurement set-up details.

The team developed VT-1 in-house, but the proposal is non-proprietary and aims to serve all stake-holders in the haptics industry: from hardware manufacturers to content creators and sound designers, and so on.

The VT-1 specification proposal is still a work-in-progress – a baseline for discussion. We warmly welcome feedback so that it can evolve into a useful document benefitting the haptics industry. Any updates to the specification, such as parameter values, new testing methods or results will be published on the Lofelt blog and website.
